South Korea has reportedly begun operational deployment of its Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile, the largest missile system the country has developed so far. According to unnamed military officials cited by The Korea Herald, the missile started entering service toward the end of last year.
A separate official from the South Korean Ministry of Defense confirmed that work is ongoing to integrate the Hyunmoo-5 into the armed forces, adding that the military aims to reach full operational capability before the end of the decade.
Authorities have not disclosed how many missiles are planned for deployment. However, the report suggests that the program envisions the fielding of several hundred high-yield systems, underscoring the scale of the effort. The missile was publicly unveiled for the first time during South Korea’s Armed Forces Day parade on 1 October 2024, where it was showcased as a surface-to-surface ballistic missile and highlighted as a key component of the country’s evolving strategic strike capabilities.
