The “provocative actions” of “enemies and rivals” will have no impact on relations between Tehran and New Delhi, Salar Velayatmadar has told RT

Iran’s relations with India remain strong despite a host of geopolitical challenges, a senior Iranian aide has told RT India.

In an exclusive interview, Salar Velayatmadar, a member of Iran’s National Security Commission, said the actions of US President Donald Trump have created turmoil for every country.

“We share profound similarities with India in language, culture, and traditions. Nothing can truly damage these bonds, not even superficial political maneuvers,” Velayatmadar said on Tuesday.

“I believe the Indian side is rational,” Velayatmadar added. “Their officials understand that the provocative actions of enemies and rivals, who are ultimately serving their own agendas, should not impact this partnership.”

India said last week that it “remains engaged” with Washington over the port of Chabahar in Iran, amid reports that it could have to relinquish its role in developing the facility as a US sanctions waiver ends on April 26.

Velayatmadar said the Chabahar deal was finalized and ratified in 2015 to secure the mutual interests of Iran and India.

India weighs future of Iranian port investment amid US sanctions

The Chabahar project has faced US restrictions since 2012, although New Delhi secured a waiver in 2018 to be part of the development. The port is viewed as vital for expanding New Delhi’s trade with Russia, Central Asia, and Afghanistan.
Situated on the Gulf of Oman in southeastern Iran, Chabahar is strategically located and is part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a shipping route developed by India, Iran, and Russia as an alternative to the Suez Canal.

After Iran was gripped by riots in late December, triggered by persistent inflation and a sharp dive in the value of the Iranian rial, Trump threatened countries doing business with Tehran with a 25% tariff.

Discussing the recent developments, Velayatmadar said “adversaries” had plotted to destabilize Iran. “But our country has swiftly restored security and normalcy,” he added.
