Lindsey Graham has hinted at regime change in the Islamic Republic a week after Washington kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
US Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has threatened intervention in Iran’s internal affairs, claiming that help is on the way for Iranian protesters. The Islamic Republic has been gripped by nationwide unrest since late December, resulting in deadly clashes with authorities.
Graham’s remarks come only a week after a US raid in Venezuela and the kidnapping of the country’s president Nicolas Maduro, with political experts warning that further developments could threaten multiple countries across several continents.
In a post on X on Saturday, Graham addressed Iranian demonstrators saying “Help is on the way,” amplifying Trump’s latest public messaging. It comes hours after Trump, on his platform Truth Social, made ambiguous remarks suggesting that the US is prepared to intervene in Iran to support its people’s quest for “freedom.”
“When President Trump says Make Iran Great Again, it means the protestors in Iran must prevail over the ayatollah,” the senator wrote. “That is the clearest signal yet that he, President Trump, understands Iran will never be great with the ayatollah and his henchmen in charge.”
On Saturday, Graham posted a photo showing himself and Trump posing with a ‘Make Iran Great Again’ hat aboard Air Force One. Trump first used the slogan in June, at the height of Israel’s 12-day air campaign against Iran. At that time, he said that if Tehran could not “make Iran great again,””regime change” should be on the table.
US forces carried out strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at the time in support of Israel. Tehran responded with a missile barrage targeting a US base in Qatar, causing no casualties.
Protests erupted in Iran on December 28 after the national currency collapsed, sending food and staple prices soaring. Demonstrations quickly escalated, with rioters reportedly clashing with police and attacking government buildings across the country. Some protesters reportedly demand the reinstatement of the monarchy. Authorities have cut internet and phone connections nationwide.
The unrest has so far claimed the lives of more than 200 people, according to Time, citing a doctor in the capital. Tasnim news agency has reported that at least 25 civilians have been killed by rioters across the country, while six security personnel have died and another 120 have been injured in Fars province.
The Iranian government has accused the US and Israel of fueling the unrest.
