The country’s interim authorities will send Washington 30-50 million barrels, the US president has claimed

Venezuela will “turn over” 30 to 50 million barrels of “high quality, sanctioned oil” to the US following Washington’s raid on Caracas and kidnapping of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, President Donald Trump has claimed.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday that the oil would be sold at market price and that “that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America,” adding he had asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright “to execute this plan, immediately.” He said the crude would be taken by storage ships and brought “directly to unloading docks” in the US to be “used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”

Venezuela, which holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves at about 303 billion barrels, produces around 1.1 million barrels a day, a major drop from the late 2010s prior to when the country was targeted by crippling Western sanctions.

Meanwhile, Kirill Dmitriev, a senior Russian negotiator in the Ukraine settlement process, wrote on X: “Buy Greenland with Venezuela oil? Innovative geopolitical M&A,” in a post that referenced a Wall Street Journal report on Trump’s renewed push to acquire the strategic island.

He also reposted a pun image evoking the iconic photo of American troops raising the US flag on Iwo Jima during World War II, swapping the banner for an oil-pump motif.

The announcement followed US strikes in Venezuela over the weekend and Maduro’s abduction to stand trial in New York over drug trafficking charges he denies. Trump has since demanded “total access” to Venezuela’s oil as well as “other things… that allow us to rebuild their country.” The US president also said that Washington would “run” Venezuela “until such time as a proper transition can take place.”

Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez has vowed that her country “will never return to being the colony of another empire,” but signaled openness to “cooperation” with Washington.
