Ties between New Delhi and Dhaka have hit a low as the latter gears up for polls early next year

India has summoned Bangladesh’s envoy to the country amid an escalating diplomatic spat between the South Asian neighbors.

The development comes after a similar action by Dhaka last week over allegations that ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been allowed to make “incendiary” statements from Indian soil.

“The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, H.E. Mr Riaz Hamidullah, was today (December 17, 2025) summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs and apprised of India’s strong concerns at the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh,” a statement by India’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The envoy’s attention was drawn to “the activities of some extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka,” it added.

New Delhi said it expects Dhaka to ensure the safety of its diplomatic missions and posts in Bangladesh.

A statement by a Bangladeshi political leader on Tuesday about offering shelter to groups inimical to India had further strained relations between the neighbors.

New Delhi said it has never allowed its territory to be used for activities against Bangladesh.

Dhaka has demanded the extradition of Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face sentences by its judicial authorities.

Bangladesh court sentences former prime minister to death

They have been sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court in a crimes against humanity case, after being found guilty of ordering a violent crackdown on student protests in 2024.

Bangladesh’s next national elections will be held on February 12, its top election official announced last week.

Hasina’s Awami League, which had been in power for 15 years before the uprising, has been barred from participating in the polls.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus is serving as the chief adviser of the interim Bangladesh government currently running the country.
