Emergency services have responded to a crash near the Louisville airport in Kentucky

A cargo plane has crashed near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky, causing multiple injuries, according to local authorities and preliminary reports.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) said on Tuesday evening that officers and other emergency agencies were responding to the scene near Fern Valley Road and Grade Lane, just south of the airport. “Injuries reported,” the department added.

Footage shared online showed a large plume of smoke rising from the area. Officials described it as an “active scene with fire and debris,” urging the public to stay away from the crash site.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for all locations within five miles of the airport, according to a LENSAlert emergency message sent to residents. “Please remain away from the area until further notice,” it stated.

While officials have not yet confirmed the type of aircraft involved or the number of people onboard, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, that the plane was a UPS MD-11 cargo aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is investigating the incident but had not yet released official details.
