A U.S. Navy destroyer and a contingent of Marines have arrived in Trinidad and Tobago, a move that comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Caracas. The deployment, officially described as a joint exercise with local forces, also serves as a clear strategic signal to Venezuela.
The forces involved include the USS Gravely (DDG-107), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, and elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). On paper, the visit appears to be a routine military engagement involving training, cooperation, and port calls. However, its timing and geography give it added weight.
Trinidad’s location is particularly significant. The island lies just off Venezuela’s northeastern coast, separated by the narrow Dragon’s Mouths channel, which in some places is only about 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide. This proximity means that when a U.S. warship is docked in Trinidad, it is operating virtually within sight of Venezuelan territorial waters—an unmistakable reminder of American reach in the region.
In this video Defense Updates examines why presence of USS Gravely in adjacent waters is a robust warning for Venezuela ?
