The North African country defeated Argentina 2‑0 on Sunday in Chile to claim their first ever FIFA U‑20 title

Morocco’s U20 national football team secured a landmark 2‑0 victory over Argentina in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday, to win the 2025 FIFA U‑20 World Cup. The triumph marks the North African side’s first world title at this level and comes months after the team took second place at the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The win makes Morocco the second African country to win the title after Ghana, who were crowned in 2009 after losing finals in 1993 and 2001.

The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when Yassir Zabiri curled home a free‑kick to give Morocco the lead. He then doubled the advantage 17 minutes later with a close‑range finish.

In a press statement following the match, coach Mohamed Ouahbi reflected on the difficult years the team had endured. He also thanked King Mohammed VI for his efforts to develop football in the country.

“Without him, we would not have achieved what we have today,” he said.

The Moroccan King congratulated the team for its historic World Cup victory by telegram, according to the BBC. King Mohammed VI their “spirit of cohesion and harmony, and a wonderful professional performance,” calling the achievement a source of pride for the nation and Africa.

Othmane Maamma earned the Golden Ball after being named Player of the Tournament, while final match hero Yassir Zabiri received the Silver Ball as the competition’s second-best performer.
