The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Pentagon has urged U.S. defense contractors to dramatically accelerate production of 12 critical missile systems amid growing concerns about a potential future conflict with China.
Officials have called on suppliers to double—or in some cases even quadruple—output on a compressed timeline, responding to worries that current stockpiles are insufficient for a high-intensity conflict scenario in the Indo-Pacific.
The weapons on the priority list include Patriot air defense interceptors, Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM), Standard Missile-6 (SM-6), Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), and Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM).
One of the most ambitious targets is the Patriot system, with the Pentagon seeking to boost production to nearly 2,000 missiles annually—roughly four times today’s rate. To support this surge, Lockheed Martin was awarded almost $10 billion in September to produce PAC-3 interceptors during fiscal years 2024 through 2026.
