On August 28, 2025, aviation photographer Aaron Maurer captured a striking image over California’s Mojave Desert: a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft carrying a Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) under its left wing.
While the integration of LRASM with the Poseidon has been in development for several years, this is the first publicly documented instance of the aircraft carrying the weapon in flight.
The photo not only confirms progress in testing but also signals a potentially transformative leap in U.S. naval strike doctrine.
Until now, the Poseidon’s role has centered on anti-submarine warfare (ASW), maritime patrol, and surveillance. With the LRASM onboard, it gains the ability not just to track and monitor hostile fleets, but to strike them from standoff ranges, making it a far more formidable multi-mission platform.
