The Indian Prime Minister has noted “stable, predictable, constructive” relations between the two neighbors

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that relations between his country and neighboring China have made progress “guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities.” Modi’s remark came as he received Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi at his residence in New Delhi.

Modi emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility on the border, and reiterated India’s commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, according to a statement released by New Delhi.

New Delhi said on Tuesday that maintaining peace and stability along the border is essential for improving relations with Beijing. During his three-day visit to the Indian capital, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with his counterpart S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Both sides have signaled they are seeking to move past what they described as a “difficult period in our relationship.”

Following the talks, New Delhi and Beijing agreed on a number of steps to improve border management, to resume direct flight connectivity “at the earliest” and re-open border trade, among other steps. Both nations also agreed to support each others’ presidency in BRICS grouping in 2026 and 2027 as well Indian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Wang, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo, extended an invitation from President Xi Jinping for Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on August 31.

Posting on X, Modi said he was “looking forward” to meeting Xi. He also expressed his support for Beijing’s presidency in the Eurasian grouping. Modi and Xi last met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia’s Kazan last year. It was their first bilateral meeting since a 2020 border clash that strained relations between the two most populous countries.

Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities. At their Kazan meetings, the two leaders gave the nod to disengage from areas of tension along the border and expressed a commitment to work towards restoring relations. Following multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks, certain proposals to ease trade and investment restrictions between India and China gained momentum, driven by industry demands.

In July, New Delhi relaxed restrictions that were initially imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
