Since 1947, Kashmir has been a bone of contention between India and Pakistan. Join us as we hear from founding director of the Australian Himalayan Foundation, Garry Weare, about crucial events which shed light on how and why the Kashmir Position evolved. Garry will discuss the dramatic timeline in October 1947 when Pakistani Indigenous tribes came within a whisker of taking Kashmir; the formation of the Jammu and Kashmir State in 1846 that led to 101 years of Maharajah’s rule until 1947; and how an Australian jurist came close to finding a solution in 1950. He will also consider how and why the outbreak of political unrest in the 1990s marked an untimely chapter as Kashmir continued its long journey to normalcy.
