Australia faces ongoing challenges in its relations with Pacific Island countries, including differences over climate change, concerns over visas, not to mention China’s assertiveness in the region. Uncertainty over the future US posture in the region adds a new layer of complexity. Even so, Australia brings a range of advantages and assets to bear in its relations with the Pacific. Recent years have been a fertile period for policy development. In this talk, James Batley will consider the ways in which Australia’s policy towards the Pacific has evolved over the past decade, and where it is today.
