One suspect has been captured by police, the Moldovan Interior Ministry has said, adding that flights are still disrupted
A lone gunman has opened fire at Moldova’s biggest airport, the nation’s interior ministry said on Friday. The assailant, who is said to be a foreign citizen who was denied entry to the country, killed at least two people, including a police officer, local media has reported.
A police special forces unit (BDPS FULGER) has been dispatched to the scene and managed to neutralize the attacker, the Moldovan interior ministry said in a statement. The suspect was injured and is receiving medical aid, it added.
“We confirm the existence of two victims,” the ministry said, without revealing their identities. Local media reported that a police officer and an airport guard were shot by the assailant. Some media also reported that the guard was in serious condition.
The shooting allegedly erupted when a foreign citizen was refused entry into Moldova. He is then said to have seized a weapon from a border guard while being escorted to the airport’s sterile zone and opened fire. The gunman reportedly arrived on a flight from Türkiye. Some media identified him as a “Russian citizen” and a “member of the military, possibly from the Wagner private military company.”
Moldovan officials have not provided any official comment on the suspect’s identity.
