The April 22, terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, has reignited tensions between India and Pakistan. Perpetrated by The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba affiliate, the attack targeted non-Muslim visitors.
India has taken several steps that includes a pause on the Indus Waters Treaty which could severely elevate Pakistan’s water problems.
Pakistan seems to be on the back foot already, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that Islamabad is ready for a “neutral investigation”.
The Resistance Front which had taken responsibility for the act earlier, has now backtracked stating that its account was hacked.
Given India’s history of retaliatory actions and the scale of the Pahalgam incident—termed the deadliest since the 2008 Mumbai attacks—the likelihood of a robust Indian response is high.
