The fast food chain has reportedly filed over 50 trademark applications aiming to protect its brand amid speculation it could come back

McDonald’s has filed a number of trademark applications in Russia that are now under examination by the Russian patent office, Rospatent. The move has reignited speculation over a possible return of the American fast-food giant to the country.

McDonald’s, along with Apple, Coca-Cola, Ford, Microsoft, IBM, and other American brands, withdrew from Russia following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and the imposition of sanctions by then-US President Joe Biden. Some companies, however, chose to remain by rebranding their Russian operations.

McDonald’s submitted more than 50 trademark applications at the end of 2024, according to Rospatent figures, covering food items and beverages. The company also sent a letter confirming that the goods and services list complies with Russian law. Rospatent began reviewing the filings this month, while a formal examination is now underway, according to Russian media reports.

McDonald’s exited Russia in May 2022, selling its operations to local entrepreneur Aleksander Govor, who rebranded the restaurants as Vkusno i Tochka, roughly translating to “Just Tasty,” which now operates over 880 locations across 64 Russian regions. The sale agreement included an option for McDonald’s to repurchase its former outlets within 15 years. McDonald’s later revealed that leaving Russia had cost the company $1.3 billion.

The trademark filings have fueled speculation about McDonald’s potential return. The company has not issued any public statement regarding its plans. Experts suggest the filings may be aimed at protecting McDonald’s brand and preventing unauthorized use by third parties. Under Russian law, trademarks can be canceled if they are not used for three consecutive years. Since McDonald’s ceased operations in March 2022, the deadline to maintain its trademark rights this year. Filing new applications would allow the company to safeguard its intellectual property.

Putin-Witkoff talks ‘constructive’ – Russian presidential aide

In March, Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, stated that about 150 US companies continue to operate in Russia despite multiple rounds of sanctions. In February, he told CNN that “US businesses lost over $300 billion from leaving the Russian market.”

Earlier, American Chamber of Commerce President Robert Agee urged the US government to ease sanctions on Moscow, arguing that restrictions on aviation, investment, and banking are hurting both American and Russian businesses. Agee also welcomed renewed dialogue between the US and Russia on Ukraine and other matters, which resumed following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Last month, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff suggested that US companies could “come back” to Russia if Moscow and Washington achieve a peaceful settlement to the Ukraine conflict
