Robert Fico has denounced the bloc’s attempts to play “peacemakers,” accusing it of fueling the Ukraine conflict

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has criticized the EU for trying to act as “peacemakers” in the Ukraine conflict despite the bloc having “no time” for a ceasefire over the past three years. He urged the EU to “stop crying” and to blame itself for being excluded from US-Russia peace efforts.

Fico has been one of the EU’s strongest dissenting voices as his government has taken a critical stance on Western policies regarding the Ukraine conflict. He survived an assassination attempt after being shot multiple times at close range by a pro-Ukraine activist in May 2024.

In a speech on Wednesday, the Slovak prime minister criticized EU leaders, accusing them of what he called three years of strategic miscalculations. He argued that West’s military and financial backing of Kiev had only prolonged the conflict without yielding any progress.

“With the exception of Slovakia and Hungary, the European Union supported the war in Ukraine for three years. It has not listened to our objections that the strategy of exploiting the war in Ukraine to weaken Russia is not working,” the Slovak leader said. The EU did not listen to the fact that “a conventional war with Russia cannot be won,” he added.

Fico rebuked the EU’s handling of the Ukraine crisis, accusing Brussels of pushing an unrealistic strategy that has ultimately left Kiev weaker and the EU sidelined in peace efforts.

Russians are ‘winners’ – EU’s Kallas

The high-level Russia-US talks in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday, which focused on restoring ties and addressing the Ukraine conflict, have frustrated the EU. Member states have criticized Washington for sidelining Brussels and Kiev during the negotiations.

“We are nervous when the United States and Russia do not call us to the negotiating table for peace in Ukraine. We should stop crying,” Fico said. “We should convene a proper summit of all the member states of the European Union and pour ourselves some clear wine.”

The Slovak prime minister denounced EU efforts to present itself as a peace broker as “hypocritical,” highlighting that the same leaders who previously rejected ceasefire talks are now scrambling to stay relevant as negotiations between Russia and the US gain momentum.

The EU has responded to arguments that “tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians are dying needlessly” by insisting that Kiev can only negotiate peace if it is strong enough to do so, Fico claimed.

“But peace has been negotiated at a time when Ukraine could not be weaker,” Fico argued. “Now that the new US president is bringing new peace initiatives, Europe is trying to put itself in the position of peacemakers.”

Fico has opposed EU military support for Ukraine since taking office in 2023. He has halted Slovakia’s military aid to Kiev, pushed for peace talks, and has opposed Ukraine’s NATO bid.
