Hungary alone is expected to contribute over $500 million a year if Washington cuts aid for Kiev, the country’s leader has warned

Brussels could force EU member states to provide financial assistance if the US decides to cut aid for Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned on Wednesday.

He made the remarks at a meeting of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, according to Magyar Nemzet news outlet.

Orban’s statement comes amid concerns in Brussels that US President Donald Trump will begin cutting financial and military support to Ukraine. The Trump administration has recently demanded that Kiev reimburse the US for aid provided since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, while also warning European NATO members they should shoulder “the overwhelming share” of future aid to Ukraine as the US will be focusing on issues closer to home.

“The Americans are withdrawing from financing Ukraine, and Brussels will want to make Europeans, including us, Hungarians, pay for this,” Orban stated. According to the prime minister, Brussels could go through with this plan if it accepts Ukraine’s EU membership bid.

“The proposal is already on the table that we, Hungarians, give Ukraine 200 billion forints [$520 million] a year,” he said. If the plan succeeds, Hungarian farmers will suffer by losing area-based subsidies which will also go to Ukraine, he warned, adding, however, that no preconditions have been given for Ukraine’s EU membership, so it should be out of the question. Budapest will never agree to this idea, he stressed.

“We are the ones who rebel against the empire… so that they cannot force their will on us from Brussels,” he said.

The Hungarian leader has long been at odds with Brussels over its approach to the Ukraine conflict, opposing the financial and military assistance the EU has provided Kiev.

Orban welcomed US efforts towards peace in Ukraine, including Tuesday’s bilateral talks between senior Russian and American officials in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. “Hungary, as before, supports the ceasefire and peace. Peace can only be good for us, energy prices will fall, trade will revive, and the economy will strengthen.”

The EU has reportedly been scrambling to formulate a plan that would allow it to continue supporting the Kiev regime in the event of the US withdrawing aid. The Polish Press Agency reported on Monday that lawmakers in Brussels plan to discuss the creation of a new fund aimed at raising money for more military assistance for Kiev. The fund will reportedly be partly based on proceeds generated from Russian assets frozen in the bloc, and partly on voluntary contributions by EU member states proportional to their national income.
