The Trump administration is reportedly asking for the return of the influencer’s passport as his legal saga continues

The administration of US President Donald Trump has intensified efforts to persuade Romanian authorities to lift travel restrictions on Andrew and Tristan Tate, prominent social media influencers facing serious criminal charges in Bucharest, Financial Times reported on Monday.

The brothers, who are dual US and UK citizens, were arrested in Romania in 2022 on allegations including human trafficking, sexual misconduct, and forming an organized crime group. They have consistently denied wrongdoing.

US officials initially raised the issue during a phone call with the Romanian government last week, several sources told FT. Subsequently, President Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, reportedly met with Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu at the Munich Security Conference, held from February 14-16, to advocate for the return of the brothers’ passports, allowing them to travel while awaiting the conclusion of legal proceedings. Hurezeanu reportedly declined to comment on the specifics of the meeting but emphasized the independence of Romania’s judiciary, stating that courts operate based on the law and due process.

Grenell, while acknowledging his support for the Tates, told FT that he had “no substantive conversation” with Hurezeanu during their encounter in Munich.

The US official has previously expressed concern over the allocation of funds by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Romania. In a post on X earlier this month, Grenell suggested that the organization had been “weaponized against people and politicians who weren’t woke.” His comments aligned with the Trump administration’s broader effort to reduce USAID expenditures and reassess its global engagements.

Conservatives around the world were targeted.

In addition to the charges in Romania, the UK is seeking the extradition of the brothers as part of an investigation into allegations of rape and human trafficking. A Romanian court has stated that any extradition proceedings will be addressed after the resolution of the current case.

The Tate brothers achieved a legal victory in January after a Romanian appeals court returned their case to prosecutors. While they have been released from house arrest, they are still barred from leaving the country.

In a written statement, cited by the FT, the brothers emphasized their commitment to working with their legal team to pursue all available legal options.

“Their sole focus is on ensuring that due process is followed and that their innocence is established in a court of law,” the statement read.

Andrew Tate, a former kickboxing champion, rose to fame after appearing on the British reality show Big Brother in 2016. He has cultivated a bold and controversial presence on social media, frequently flaunting his wealth and promoting courses that claim to help young men achieve financial and personal success.

While he has amassed a large following, critics accuse him of promoting misogyny and having a negative influence on young men – a claim he strongly denies.
