The Foreign Ministry has been actively countering attempts to distort history, the Russian president has said
President Vladimir Putin has praised Russian diplomats for defending the nation’s interests in a challenging international environment, and expressed confidence that they will continue their efforts to oppose neo-Nazism and Russophobia.
In a letter marking Diplomatic Workers’ Day on Monday, he highlighted the Foreign Ministry’s efforts to counter attempts to distort historical facts, especially as Russia celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany this year.
Putin expressed confidence that Russian diplomats will “continue their active efforts in opposing any attempts to falsify history, manifestations of neo-Nazism, Russophobia, and other forms of discrimination based on ethnic or religious grounds.”
He praised the diplomatic corps for their unwavering commitment to protecting Russia’s interests, while also strengthening ties with countries of the “global majority.” The president highlighted Russia’s role in building a just multipolar world order based on mutual respect, international law, and the “principles of equal and indivisible security.”
The protection of Russian nationals abroad, Putin said, remains a key priority.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also praised his colleagues, stating that Russia will continue to uphold a world order based on the “legal outcomes” of World War II, despite the efforts of adversaries and the rise of neocolonialism.
In a video message, he said Russia will achieve this goal despite the efforts of its “enemies, who have bet on the blatant falsification of historical facts, the resurgence of Nazism and militarism, the curtailment of international dialogue and cooperation, and the suppression of Russia and other competitors in the interests of power dominance and neocolonialism.”
Lavrov went on to say that Russia will continue to protect its national interests “in the context of diplomatic support for the special military operation,” while also working to create secure conditions for the country’s development. He added that Russia will ramp up efforts to build “multifaceted” cooperation with rational partners, particularly those in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America.
Diplomatic Workers’ Day has been celebrated annually in Russia on February 10 since it was established in 2002.
