European officials pushed Kiev to attack and falsely claimed that Russia would collapse, Bulgaria’s Rumen Radev has said

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has accused EU leaders of pushing unrealistic policies related to the Ukraine conflict. Speaking on Wednesday at a forum on competitiveness in Sofia, the head of state blasted Brussels’ ineptitude, asserting that it is only starting to wake up from its lethargy in addressing urgent issues such as high energy prices.

Radev’s remarks, reported by local and international media, resonated with sentiments shared by other EU leaders who have questioned the bloc’s unwavering pledge to support Kiev “for as long as it takes” while neglecting diplomatic engagement with Moscow.

”Why, instead of building solid defense lines to preserve its potential and territory, was Ukraine encouraged by many leaders to launch a counteroffensive with the utopian assurance of defeating Russia?” Radev asked, referencing Kiev’s unsuccessful 2023 counteroffensive.

He further challenged the narrative on the effectiveness of Ukraine-related sanctions: “Why have we been constantly convinced that the collapse of the Russian economy is a matter of months?” In reality, Radev pointed out, NATO estimates that Moscow produces three times more munitions than the entire EU.

Radev warned that the EU risks being excluded from the resolution of the Ukraine conflict by the US and Russia, even though it has a vital interest in influencing the outcome. He urged swift diplomatic action to secure a “visible place” at the negotiating table, adding that given Moscow’s current battlefield advantage, reaching an agreement will be challenging.

The president urged for a review of EU policies to find a new balance between economic growth, self-defense and diplomatic action. He is skeptical about calls for member states to boost their defense spending to 5% of GDP, asserting that some nations would struggle to achieve a 1% increase. There are reasonable concerns that EU countries would be forced to “sacrifice the welfare state for the sake of rearming the continent,” Radev cautioned.

Radev is a popular figure in Bulgaria currently serving his second consecutive five-year term, though his powers as president are limited. His critical perception of the EU is similar to those of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
