The president-elect has promised to build a missile defense shield analogous to Israel’s
US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to enhance domestic security by building an ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense shield around the entire country. He made the pledge at his ‘Make America Great Again Victory Rally’ in Washington DC on Sunday, on the eve of his inauguration as the 47th US president.
“I will direct our military to begin construction of the great Iron Dome Missile Defense Shield, which will all be made in the USA,” Trump told his supporters, outlining plans for his first 100 days in office.
Trump repeatedly voiced support for a domestically-made ‘Iron Dome’ during his election campaign last year, with the project appearing in the Republican Party’s pre-election commitments and Trump’s “core promises.”
The original ‘Iron Dome’ was developed by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries with US support. The shield has a range of about 70km. For longer-range threats, Israel employs systems such as David’s Sling and the Arrow 3. Trump has never detailed how he plans to adapt the concept for the US.
Experts have questioned the viability of copying the Israeli-developed ‘Iron Dome’ given the differences in the countries’ geographic locations. The original ‘Iron Dome’ was designed to intercept short-range missiles, while for the US the primary threat comes from intercontinental ballistic missiles.
“You can’t defend the entire United States. It’s unrealistic, unaffordable and unachievable,” General Glen VanHerck, who retired as head of the US Northern Command recently told ABC News. He noted that the US military has not expressed interest in a nationwide missile defense system, as the project does not make much sense from a strategic standpoint.
Apart from the ‘Iron Dome’ pledge, Trump made a slew of other promises for his administration’s first few weeks in office. They ranged from ramping up artificial intelligence programs and creating a new Department of Government Efficiency, to eliminating “wokeness” from the military and making records related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy available to the public.
“We’re going to give them the best first day, the biggest first week, and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history,” Trump vowed, adding that he also plans to repeal “every radical and foolish executive order of the Biden administration” within hours of taking office.
