A new era will begin for the West after US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Hungarian prime minister has said

Brussels must lift the sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine conflict after US President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with Kossuth Radio on Friday. Budapest has been one of the few EU capitals to criticize the restrictions, arguing that they harm the bloc more than Moscow.

Following Trump’s inauguration on Monday, “a new era will dawn on the Western world,” in which Washington and Brussels should reverse their policies towards Moscow, Orban has argued.

“It is time to throw sanctions out the window,” he said, adding that the goal for the EU in 2025 should be to “establish a sanction-free relationship with Russia.”

According to the prime minister, one of Hungary’s key achievements during its rotating European Council presidency in the second half of last year was that it “managed to put the cause of peace [between Russia and Ukraine] on the table and keep it there.”

Last summer, Orban embarked on what he called a “peace mission” in an attempt to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict, visiting Kiev, Moscow, and Beijing, as well as then-presidential candidate Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The Hungarian leader’s initiative faced harsh criticism in the EU, with top officials calling it “a problem” and insisting that Orban was not representing the bloc.

Ending the fighting between Russia and Ukraine was too big of a task for Hungary, a country of around 9.5 million people, Orban acknowledged, adding that he can now “pass the baton” to Trump.

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to swiftly settle the Ukraine crisis if elected, but did not provide specifics on how he would achieve this. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow will be open to studying any proposals for resolving the conflict presented by the new administration in Washington.

The Financial Times reported last week that EU officials are concerned that Trump could overturn some of the US restrictions against Russia, “simply because they were taken by [Joe] Biden.”

However, the president-elect’s nominee for treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, told the Senate on Thursday that he “will be 100% on board for taking sanctions up – especially on the Russian oil majors – to levels that would bring Russia to the table.” Bessent also said Biden’s sanctions on Moscow “were not fulsome enough.”
