Victims of the global trend are becoming obese and increasing their risk of an early death, Vitaly Milonov has argued

The ideology of body positivity should be designated undesirable in Russia as it poses a threat to the nation’s health, controversial Russian State Duma lawmaker Vitaly Milonov has said.

Milonov, who serves as deputy head of the parliamentary family protection committee, made the proposal in a letter to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, which was seen by RT on Wednesday.

“Considering the social and medical danger of body positivity, I am asking you to put forward an initiative to recognize this ideology as undesirable on the territory of Russia,” he urged the minister.

The trend runs counter to the Russian government’s efforts to protect the health of the citizens, promote a healthy lifestyle, and support traditional family values, the member of parliament wrote.

According to Milonov, the growing popularity of body positivity – a social movement advocating for acceptance of all body types and challenging traditional beauty standards – around the world, including in Russia, is a cause for concern.

There are hundreds of websites and social media groups promoting the trend in the country, which “propagandize an unhealthy lifestyle, refusal of dietary discipline and exercise, and disregard for generally accepted perceptions of beauty and neatness,” he wrote.

“The victims of this ideology are mainly young girls and boys, who… become obese, abandon hygiene standards, develop chronic diseases and ultimately reach the brink of early death,” the lawmaker said.

The unrestricted spread of body positivity ideas poses a significant threat to the health of the entire nation, he warned.

In the fall, Russian lawmaker Irina Filatova attributed the country’s demographic challenges to the fact that “30% of women of childbearing age have some degree of obesity and another 25% are at pre-obesity stage levels.”

Data from the state statistics agency Rosstat suggests that only 1.264 million babies were born in Russia in 2023, the lowest number since 1999. According to the agency’s forecast, birth rates will only start to grow after 2028. By 2046, the Russian population is projected to decline to 138 million.

Last year, the Russian parliament outlawed the promotion of ‘child free’ ideology, which urges women to give up on having kids, putting it in the same category as pedophilia, LGBT and gender reassignment propaganda. Milonov had been one of the most active proponents of the ban.
