NATO members should boost defense spending to counter Moscow, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that the EU is stronger than Russia and urged NATO member states to ramp up their defense spending across the US-led military bloc to counter Moscow.

Tusk made the remarks on Wednesday during a joint press conference with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who was in Warsaw on an official visit.

”Europe is stronger than Russia in every dimension,” Tusk stated, adding that if all the NATO members spent “as much as Poland for their defense we would be spending ten times more than Russia.”

NATO’s defense spending benchmark is currently set at 2% of GDP, a target that many countries have struggled to achieve. Poland aims to spend 4.7% of GDP on defense this year, the highest in NATO.

Last week, US President-elect Donald Trump suggested that NATO countries should start spending 5% of their GDP on defense. European members of the US-led military bloc continue to spend “only a tiny fraction” of what Washington spends on defense, even though they are more affected by the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Trump argued.

Commenting on Trump’s remarks, Tusk said on Wednesday that “the new Washington administration, once it sees how serious we are about this, will adopt a different approach, a more optimistic approach towards Ukraine,” apparently referring to his willingness to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end, as he has repeatedly signaled.

EU and NATO member Poland has been one of Kiev’s staunchest supporters since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. With Poland now holding the EU rotating presidency, Tusk has pledged to leverage Warsaw’s leadership position to accelerate Ukraine’s integration into the bloc.

Trump’s push to boost defense spending has elicited mixed reactions, with some EU officials expressing concerns over its economic feasibility. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, who is running as the Green Party’s candidate for chancellor in February’s snap elections, has called the target “unrealistic.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko has recently warned that NATO appears to be preparing for war with Moscow, adding that the bloc’s current course poses a danger to both Russia and to the overall security architecture.
