None of them should be neglected, according to Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov

There are only 7,000 living veterans of the Second World War in Russia and none of them should be neglected, the country’s Defense Minister Andrey Belousov has said.

Belousov made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting of the Victory Organizing Committee as Russia is preparing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in May.

“It is extremely important to surround them (veterans) with special care, to make sure that none of them are left without attention,” the defense minister stressed.

According to Belousov, veterans will traditionally take their place of honor in the stands of the main military parades on May 9. Those of them who won’t be able to join the Victory Day celebration due to health reasons will be personally visited and congratulated at their homes and medical institutions by representatives of the authorities and public organizations.

On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree authorizing one-time payments to veterans in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Germany’s surrender. The payments, ranging from 50,000 to 80,000 rubles ($490-$780) will be distributed between April and May 2025.

Another European leader confirms Moscow trip for WWII ‘Victory Day’

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that the number of leaders and high-ranking officials invited to May 9 celebrations is comparable to the last BRICS summit, held in Kazan.

Putin has invited, among others, the leaders and military units of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) countries, which include Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Last month, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he will travel to Russia along with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico to celebrate the defeat of the Third Reich, highlighting the importance of Victory Day. Their decision to accept Putin’s invitation has sparked a significant backlash in the EU.

In his address at the Victory Day military parade in Moscow last year, the Russian leader accused the West of pursuing a colonial policy and inciting regional conflicts to restrain the development of non-Western nations. Putin vowed that Russia would do everything possible to prevent a global conflict, but warned that it would not allow anyone to threaten its own security and sovereignty.
