Ukraine is falling apart, and Sofia has a historical right to the southern part of the country, Kostadin Kostadinov says
Bulgaria has every right to claim a part of southern Ukraine with which it has centuries-old ties, Kostadin Kostadinov, the leader of the far-right eurosceptic Revival Party, has said.
Writing on Facebook on Thursday, Kostadinov weighed in on the controversial remarks by incoming US President Donald Trump that Washington could reclaim the Panama Canal and annex Canada.
He praised Trump’s stance as “entirely justified,” arguing that Canada and the US have a lot in common culturally and historically and that “there is nothing more logical and normal” than for such states to unite. Meanwhile, the US was the country that built and owned the Panama Canal until 1979, he added.
The same logic, he continued, could be applied to Bulgaria and Ukraine. According to Kostadinov, Ukraine’s region of Southern Bessarabia – a part of Odessa Region today – belonged to the Bulgarian state for over 450 years, while Kiev “has controlled [it] for only 34 years.” He also claimed that ethnic Bulgarians make up the majority of Southern Bessarabia’s population.
“This is why it is entirely logical for… Southern Bessarabia to return to Bulgaria. Ukraine is disintegrating, and at the future peace congress, where the fate of the so-called Ukrainian statehood will be decided, Bulgaria must assert its claims to Bulgarian Bessarabia,” he insisted.
Ukraine’s embassy in Bulgaria lashed back at Kostadinov, saying that his remarks are “unacceptable for a politician of an EU member state and confirm his systematic promotion of Kremlin narratives.”
It also called on the Bulgarian authorities to denounce the remarks, urging them to reject rhetoric that “distorts historical facts, incites the redrawing of European borders, and undermines international law.” Revival is the third largest party in the Bulgarian parliament.
Southern Bessarabia, which spans parts of modern-day Ukraine and Moldova, was part of the First Bulgarian Empire (681-1018) and briefly the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396). The Bulgarians valued the territory running along the Danube River and Black Sea coast for commerce and defensive purposes. Over time, Bulgarian influence declined as the Golden Horde, Ottoman Empire, and later the Russian Empire took control.
Southern Bessarabia has been home to multiple ethnic groups, including Bulgarians, Romanians, Gagauz, Ukrainians, and Russians. Many of the Bulgarians in the region are descendants of settlers who moved there during the 18th and 19th centuries.
