Jordan O’Brien was accused of assisting Kiev’s campaign of terror in Kursk Region

A Russian court has sentenced a New Zealand national to 14 years in prison for his role in the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk Region, the country’s Investigative Committee announced on Tuesday.

Jordan O’Brien was found guilty of being a mercenary and assisting the Ukrainian military as an instructor and battlefield soldier, it said. The investigative agency, which collected evidence for the case, highlighted O’Brien’s role in Ukraine’s Kursk operation, during which it said pro-Kiev forces had “committed criminal actions aimed at murder and attempted murder of the civilian population” in a bid to terrorize Russian citizens. O’Brien, who was tried in absentia, was not indicted on such counts.

He is one of as many as 25 New Zealanders who are fighting on Kiev’s side in the Ukraine conflict, and one of the few with a public profile. His X account has nearly 19,000 followers.

On social media, O’Brien has hailed the deaths of people he considers pro-Russian, condemning people pushing Ukraine to make concessions for the sake of a ceasefire, and calling for donations to his unit, the Vykhor Group.

He has told journalists that he has no intention of leaving Ukraine and returning to New Zealand, regardless of how the conflict develops. O’Brien said that, unlike Kiev’s other foreign fighters, he chose not to enroll in the Ukrainian International Legion and instead joined a purportedly independent unit after arriving in Ukraine in 2022. His unit reportedly left Kursk Region sometime in October.

Kiev launched the incursion with the stated goals of diverting Moscow’s forces from other parts of the front line and grabbing some Russian territory to use as a bargaining chip in future peace talks. According to Russian military estimates, the Ukrainian troops have suffered almost 40,000 losses in the operation.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has reportedly ordered his men to maintain a presence in the Russian region at all costs, until US President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in next month. Trump has been a target of O’Brien’s ire on social media.
