The two leaders discussed trade, investment, and regional security challenges in their first conversation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended an invitation to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to visit Russia, which was “warmly accepted,” the Kremlin press service reported on Friday.

The two leaders had a phone conversation on Friday during which they reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the historically friendly relations between Russia and Senegal.

“The leaders expressed their commitment to strengthening the traditionally friendly Russian-Senegalese relations in trade, economic, and investment spheres, including the implementation of promising joint projects in energy, transportation, and agriculture,” the press service stated.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of greater involvement by Russian businesses in partnerships with Senegalese counterparts.

The discussion also addressed the ongoing instability in the Sahel-Sahara region and West Africa, where terrorist groups continue to pose significant challenges.

This marked Faye’s first direct dialogue with Putin since taking office in April 2024.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced in August following talks with Senegalese Foreign Minister Yassine Fall that Russia is ready to support Senegal and other African nations in bolstering defense capabilities and counterterrorism efforts. Lavrov warned of the growing threat from Islamist groups in West Africa and emphasized the need for joint action to combat terrorism.

Fall reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening ties with Russia, describing the partnership as rooted in “friendship and brotherly ties.”
