The incident in Kharkov Region reportedly claimed the lives of two men trapped in a zone where there was fighting

Ukrainian troops have allegedly bombed two of their own citizens, a pair of local residents being guided to safety by a Russian drone in Kharkov Region.

The incident, described on Thursday by the news outlet MASH, reportedly occurred in Volchansk, a small town in the region that is contested by Russian troops. Two local residents were apparently stranded between the clashing forces, after one of them was injured. They hid in a half-destroyed house and displayed a note reading “SOS. Medical emergency. Where to go?” in large letters that could be seen from the air.

A Russian reconnaissance unit spotted the plea and dropped some supplies and a message, instructing the pair to follow a drone. But after the civilians started moving towards Russian positions in the company of a dog, the Ukrainians intercepted them, the report claimed. They used drones carrying improvised bombs to strike the fleeing men.

MASH released drone footage supporting the story, including the moment the purported Ukrainian bomb landed meters from the refugees, who were wearing civilian clothes and carried no military gear.

In the aftermath, one of the victims could be seen lying motionless on the ground while the other appeared seriously injured. The footage concludes with another explosion nearby and the two still bodies, as the dog paces around.

Russian troops entered Kharkov Region in mid-May after months of Ukrainian attacks on the neighboring Russian Belgorod Region, including its administrative center, Belgorod. Moscow said its goal was to establish a security zone along the border to undermine Kiev’s ability to strike inside Russian territory with shorter-range weapons.

The US responded to the operation by deviating from its previous policy and allowing the Ukrainians to use donated American arms, under certain circumstances, inside what is universally recognized as Russian territory, Western media reported at the time.

Ukraine is currently invading Russia’s border Kursk Region, using the extensive arsenal of heavy weapons provided by the US and its allies. Western officials have claimed since the incursion started last week that this does not violate any restrictions imposed on Ukraine.
