The IOC had granted permission to the country’s athletes to attend the festivities

Russian athletes will not be taking part in the Paris Olympics closing ceremony on August 11, despite receiving permission to attend, TASS reported on Saturday, citing sports federations. According to the report, nearly all of the 15 Russians who competed this year have already left France.

The last Russian athlete to take part in the Olympics was rower Zakhar Petrov, who took fourth place in the canoe single 1,000-meter final on August 9. Canoeists Olesya Romasenko and Aleksey Korovashkov finished up earlier this week and already arrived back home.

“None of the Russian canoeists will go to the closing ceremony,” the pan-Russian Canoe and Kayaking Federation told TASS. Vyacheslav Ekimov, the president of the Russian Cycling Federation, also stated that the cyclists taking part in the Games have already left Paris.

“Our cyclists are all home. They are preparing for the next starts,” he said. Similar statements were made by the Russian Trampoline Jumping Federation.

US preparing to spread ‘elaborate lies’ about Russian athletes – spy agency

“Everyone has a busy tournament schedule, everyone immediately flies away,” Aleksey Selivanenko, the vice president of the Russian Tennis Federation, told the news agency.

The International Olympics Committee (IOC) initially banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing internationally following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. However, in December last year, and despite objections from Kiev, the body allowed limited participation for athletes from the two countries at the Summer Olympics as neutral competitors. Over 30 Russians were approved, but many refused to take part, citing the humiliating conditions and solidarity with those who were banned.

The IOC previously ruled that athletes from both countries would be barred from the opening ceremony, but said this week they would be allowed to attend the closing ceremony as individual athletes and without the neutral flag.

Moscow has described the IOC’s treatment of Russian athletes as insulting and discriminatory, with the Foreign Ministry comparing it to racism. Most Russian TV channels and streaming services have boycotted this year’s Olympics entirely.
