The US president has blasted Norway over the decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize

US President Donald Trump has rebuked Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize, saying the decision had freed him from any obligation to think “purely of peace,” according to a letter circulated by multiple media outlets on Monday.

Trump made the jab in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, blasting Norway over a refusal “to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS.”

In light of this, the US president said he “no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of Peace.” However, he noted that peace would still remain “predominant” on his agenda, but he could now focus on “what is good and proper for the United States of America.”

Trump continued the letter by pivoting to his push for establishing US control over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, arguing that “the World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

He questioned Denmark’s claim to Greenland, saying there were “no written documents” establishing ownership and arguing that Copenhagen could not protect the strategic Arctic island from Russia or China.

“I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States,” Trump argued.

The US and European NATO members have been at odds over Greenland, with European leaders rejecting Trump’s push to acquire the Arctic island.

As tensions escalated, Trump threatened tariffs on eight European countries until the US is allowed to buy the island, prompting a joint European warning of a “dangerous downward spiral.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee; officials in Oslo have insisted they have no influence over its decisions.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who in January gifted the medal to Trump. While the US president praised the move as “a wonderful gesture of mutual respect,” the Nobel Committee refused to recognize the handover, saying the award and title “can neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others.”
