The move comes amid a diplomatic spat with New Delhi and political unrest in Dhaka ahead of polls next month
Bangladesh has further limited visa options for Indian nationals, its foreign ministry has told a local media outlet.
The Dhaka Tribune reported on Friday that the visa restrictions apply to Bangladesh’s deputy high commissions in Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai.
The report said the policy takes effect from Thursday, and that all categories of visas, except business and employment visas, will no longer be issued.
On December 22, 2025, Dhaka temporarily suspended visa issuance and consular services at the Bangladeshi High Commission in New Delhi, the Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, and the visa center in Siliguri.
Consular services were also halted at the mission in Guwahati in India’s northeastern state of Assam.
Bilateral ties between New Delhi and Dhaka have been strained recently.
In 2024, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after an uprising toppled her. An interim government took over led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, who now holds the position of chief adviser.
Renewed violence broke out in Bangladesh in December after a leader of the 2024 movement was shot dead. India has urged the interim administration to protect minorities amid the unrest.
Meanwhile, Dhaka has continued to demand the extradition of Hasina from India after a court sentenced her to death for crimes against humanity. The former prime minister has dismissed the verdict as a foregone conclusion and politically motivated.
Hasina’s Awami League, which was in power for 15 years before the uprising, has been barred from participating in the general elections scheduled for next month.
