Journalists, media leaders and political figures gather in Addis Ababa for the continent’s inaugural awards celebrating African storytelling

The inaugural African Media Excellence Conference and the African Media Awards is taking place on Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together journalists, media executives, politicians, and descendants of prominent African liberation figures.

According to organizers, more than 800 submissions from over 40 African countries has been received, with finalists competing across several journalism and media categories. Several special prizes will also be presented.

RT is participating as a partner and co-organizer of the events. Vera Kharina, RT’s director general, said the network was honored to take part in an initiative designed to showcase the diversity of African storytelling.

Participants of the conference are expected to discuss Africa’s voice in a multipolar world, evolving approaches to storytelling, and the use of AI in media.

The event is supported by the African Union of Broadcasting, the Patrice Emery Lumumba Foundation, the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, the Kenneth Kaunda Legacy Foundation, the Sisulu Foundation for Social Justice, and the PLO Lumumba Foundation.
