Pretoria has urged Madagascar’s authorities to open dialogue with protesters and avoid actions that risk escalating tensions

The South African government has expressed deep concern over the unfolding political crisis in Madagascar, calling for calm, restraint, and respect for the democratic process.

This comes after a faction of soldiers joined thousands of youth protesters in the capital, Antananarivo, demanding President Andry Rajoelina’s resignation amid ongoing shortages of water and electricity, police brutality, and accusations of government mismanagement.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, Chrispin Phiri, Department of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson, said South Africa urges all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions or worsen the humanitarian situation.

“The Government of the Republic of South Africa has noted with deep concern the recent political developments in the Republic of Madagascar. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and the destruction of property that has occurred”.

”South Africa calls for calm and restraint from all actors and urges them to do everything necessary to avoid any further action that may escalate tensions or worsen the humanitarian situation”.

”We strongly call upon all parties to respect the democratic process and constitutional order. It is imperative that any disputes be resolved peacefully through inclusive dialogue, cooperation, and established legal mechanisms”.

He added that “in accordance with the Lomé declaration, South Africa does not support unconstitutional changes of government”.
