A car-ramming and stabbing incident has taken place on the Jewish religious holiday Yom Kippur
A car and stabbing attack has left at least four people injured outside a synagogue in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester.
A member of the public called the police at 9.31am local time, saying he had witnessed a car being driven towards members of the public, and that one man had been stabbed, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement on Monday.
The police have declared a major incident, and deployed firearm officers, following reports that a security guard had been attacked with a knife. One man, believed to be the offender, has been shot.
Police have activated “Plato,” the national code word used to signal a “marauding terror attack.”
Footage shared on social media appears to show police officers aiming their weapons at a person lying on the ground in front of the synagogue. The officers could be heard telling bystanders to “get back” and “move on.”
The individual on the ground is seen beginning to rise when a gunshot rings out, causing them to collapse. Another person was shown lying still near the synagogue gates, with blood visible by their head.
British Prime Minister Kier Starmer has announced that he has cut short his attendance at a summit in Denmark and that more police are being deployed at synagogues across the UK country, Sky News has reported.
