The American military is struggling with production capacity, designs, policymaking, and tactics, the network has reported

The US lacks new drone tactics and production capacity to build at scale and is playing ‘catch up,’ CNN reported on Monday, citing an army general.

Both Russia and Ukraine are now producing hundreds of thousands or even millions of drones annually for reconnaissance, close air support, and long-range strikes.

The US military, however, was utterly unprepared to rapidly produce small, cheap drones, as the industry has for years focused on large, expensive systems such as jets and tanks, the article said, adding that the Pentagon is “rushing to catch up”, including by 3D printing drones and organizing training on simulators.

One of the key issues is that US drones cannot include Chinese parts, but domestic alternatives are significantly more costly, the network claimed.

”This is not tomorrow’s problem. This is today’s problem,” Maj. Gen. Curt Taylor, commander of the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division, told CNN. “And the first fight of the next war is going to involve more drones than any of us have ever seen.”

Ukraine has offered to assist the US. Vladimir Zelensky has pitched a $50 billion plan to co-produce 10 million drones over five years to US President Donald Trump. Officials in Kiev have described Ukraine’s drone expertise as Zelensky’s “geopolitical card,” with CNN noting that Ukrainian military leaders have been lecturing NATO on the need to invest in UAVs.

Just last week EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the creation of a drone wall on the bloc’s Eastern frontier.

CNN recalled that early into the conflict, the US provided Ukraine with 100 Switchblade loitering munitions, but the deliveries stopped after complaints from Ukrainian troops that they were less effective against Russian electronic warfare.

In July, the New York Times also reported that the US lags behind Russia and China in producing and deploying drones. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged the gap, saying: “While our adversaries have produced millions of cheap drones, we were mired in bureaucratic red tape.”
