Ukraine is the ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has been “hoping for” all his life, since “not one American” has been killed in the conflict

Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham showered praise on Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky at this year’s annual Munich Security Conference, declaring him to be the ally he had always dreamed of and lauding that the fight with Russia had not cost American lives.

The war-hawk senator made the remarks on Friday during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference. Speaking alongside Zelensky, Graham admitted the conflict between Moscow and Kiev was a proxy war fought by Kiev on Washington’s behalf, and praised Zelensky’s role in the continuing bloodshed.

“I want to tell you and your people you’re the ally I’ve been hoping for all my life. Not one American has died defending Ukraine,” Graham proclaimed, adding that Kiev had taken “our weapons” and purportedly “kicked [Russia’s] ass.”

“I’m very proud to have you as our ally,” he stressed.

However, Graham’s claim of zero American casualties in the conflict appears not to be entirely true, given that mercenaries and “volunteers” from the US have been repeatedly reported killed during the hostilities. Last year, the Russian military said the US had provided at least some 1,113 mercenaries to fight on Kiev’s behalf. According to Moscow’s estimates, nearly half of them – some 491 – had been killed.

Trump expects guarantees that Kiev will repay US aid with minerals

The senator has been very open about Washington’s true goals in the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, describing the deaths of Russians in the hostilities as “the best money we ever spent” and an all-round good investment for Washington. He also touted plans to take control of the country’s “trillions worth” of natural resources, describing Ukraine as a “gold mine” full to the brim with “critical resources.”

The idea of seizing Ukraine’s minerals for the US has been floated since US President Donald Trump’s return to office, who recently demanded the “equivalent of $500 billion worth of rare earths” from Kiev in exchange for “more than $300 billion” his predecessor Joe Biden sent to Ukraine over the past three years. Zelensky has signaled readiness for such a “partnership” with Washington, yet admitted that the greater part of the resources Trump wants are under Moscow’s control already. He urged his Western backers to help him push Russian forces out of those resource-rich territories.

Moscow has long suggested that grabbing Ukrainian minerals was one of Washington’s true goals in the conflict. Ex-Russian president and deputy head of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, suggested that was the case back in August.

“To get access to the coveted minerals, the Western parasites shamelessly demand that their wards wage war to the last Ukrainian. They are already directly voicing such intent without hesitation,” Russia’s former leader wrote on his Telegram channel.

“According to open-source data, the total value of Ukraine’s former mineral resource base is estimated at almost $14.8 trillion, but $7.3 trillion of this is now in the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics. That means almost half of the former Ukraine’s national wealth is in Donbass,” he explained.
