The 5-days halt in gunfire incidents comes amid the country’s largest-ever mass-deportation operation

New York City has recorded five days without a single shooting victim this week for the first time in three decades, according to the city’s police department (NYPD). The report comes amid a major crackdown on illegal immigration in the US.

According to NYPD’s statement, the five-day stretch lasted from Saturday evening until Thursday evening, and ended with a shooting in Brooklyn.

“This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era,” the department stated on Thursday, referencing the statistical data tracking system it launched in 1994.

However, according to the New York Post, the no-shooting streak was broken just four minutes after the NYPD announcement was made, when a 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in the borough of Brooklyn. The victim was reportedly hospitalized and is currently in stable condition; no related arrests have been made.

As of January 19, the NYPD had reported 45 shooting victims since the start of the year, matching the number recorded during the same period in 2024.

Mayor Eric Adams said on Wednesday that the NYPD has seized over 20,000 illegal firearms off the streets since 2022. According to official figures, this is 3,000 more than in the previous three-year period.

The NYPD report comes as the US has begun flying hundreds of illegal immigrants back to their countries of origin following a nationwide wave of arrests.

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X that “the largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway.” She revealed that Donald Trump’s administration had “arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals,” adding that “hundreds” have been deported by military aircraft.

Trump, who promised a crackdown on illegal immigration during his election campaign, declared a national emergency at the country’s southern border during his inauguration on Monday. He has announced several immigration and border-related measures, including deploying 1,500 active-duty troops to the US-Mexico border.

According to the Office of Homeland Security Statistics, there are an estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the US. Data shows that in 2022, New York ranked sixth among the ten US states with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations, with over 400,000.

The new US administration’s immigration clampdown has sparked a backlash; Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a respectful bilateral dialogue.

US Democratic attorneys-general have promised to sue the Trump administration if the Department of Justice enforces a recent directive requiring local law enforcement to assist in federal immigration crackdowns.
