Donald Trump has reportedly returned the Diet Coke button to the redecorated room in the White House

US President Donald Trump has returned a special Diet Coke button to his desk in the Oval Office, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. By pressing it, the president will be able to quickly summon one of his staffers to bring him his favorite soft drink.

The Diet Coke button was a distinctive feature of Trump’s previous presidency (2017-2021); he reportedly consumes up to 12 cans per day. The small red knob, hidden in a wooden box, was removed in 2021 during a redecoration when Joe Biden came to power.

Before Trump’s inauguration on Monday, the CEO of Coca-Cola gifted him a special-edition Diet Coke bottle, a nod to their earlier misstep of offering him a regular Coke during his first term.

While serving his first term, the head of state reportedly used the Diet Coke button to prank guests. In 2017, the Financial Times quoted him saying that all his visitors thought it launched nuclear weapons. “Everyone does get a little nervous when I press that button,” the president told a reporter.

In 2019, former White House aide Cliff Sims echoed this fact in his book “Team of Vipers.” He described how Trump used to suddenly press the button, claiming it might activate nuclear capabilities. “Not sure what to do, guests would look at one another with raised eyebrows. Moments later, a steward would enter the room carrying a glass filled with Diet Coke on a silver platter, and Trump would burst out laughing,” the ex-staffer wrote.

The red button reportedly appeared on Biden’s desk several times during his presidency, too, but the purposes of its use remain unclear. In 2022, a comedic sketch by the actor James Corden gave birth to the rumor that the president used the button to order ice cream. The White House never confirmed this information.

According to the British billionaire Richard Branson, Barack Obama used the button to request tea for guests during his presidency (2009-2017).

The reported return of the Diet Coke button is part of the Oval Office redecoration which happens every time a new president assumes the White House. It normally includes the replacement of rugs, drapes, paintings and statues with alternative items from government office collections.

The Oval Office is the only meeting room in the White House that is personalized for the sitting president. It is used for talks with foreign dignitaries, congressional leaders and for the head of state’s addresses to the nation. The redecoration of the room takes place within a few hours, while the outgoing president is still in the building.
