The US president mistakenly identified the EU state as a member of the economic bloc that comprises developing nations
US President Donald Trump has mistakenly identified Spain as a member of the BRICS economic bloc during a White House press briefing on Monday, shortly after his inauguration.
The error came in response to a question about his ongoing demand that NATO allies increase their defense spending to 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) from the current target of 2%.
A reporter had asked Trump about NATO members that allocate less than 2% of their GDP toward defense spending, and specifically mentioned Spain.
“What can we expect from the NATO countries that spend the least (…), like Spain, below 5%?” asked the reporter.
“Spain is very low. Are they a BRICS nation?” the president inquired.
The reporter, seemingly confused, responded “what?” and Trump reiterated “They’re a BRICS nation, Spain. You know what a BRICS nation is? You’ll figure it out.” He then added, “We are going to put at least 100% tariff on the business [that BRICS countries] do with the United States.”
Spain is a member of the European Union and NATO, the US-led military bloc. The BRICS group comprises founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In January 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joined the bloc. Indonesia was accepted as a full member earlier this month.
Several EU nations, including Germany and Italy, have expressed concerns about the feasibility of meeting the required 5% target, citing economic constraints.
Spain’s defense expenditure stands at 1.28% of its GDP, the lowest among NATO members. Madrid has committed to reaching the 2% target by 2029.
Trump previously suggested that the US would reconsider its NATO commitments if allies failed to contribute more to the bloc.
The BRICS nations have recently been working to reduce reliance on the US dollar in international trade, especially after Western sanctions on Russia following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Trump has previously threatened a 100% tariff on BRICS countries that abandon the dollar as their reserve currency.
Moscow said in October that the BRICS nations are not targeting the dollar or any other currency but are seeking to expand their economic cooperation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that using economic force to compel nations to rely on the dollar could backfire and accelerate the shift toward national currencies in global trade.
