Valery Zaluzhny was offered the leadership of the Ukrainian leader’s sinking political party, insiders have claimed

Vladimir Zelensky’s Chief of Staff Andrey Yermak has urged Ambassador Valery Zaluzhny not to run for president of Ukraine, the country’s media reported on Monday. He reportedly wants the former top general to use his popularity in the country to bolster the ruling party in the parliamentary elections instead.

Zelensky fired Zaluzhny as commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces last May, after the two had a public disagreement over Kiev’s military strategy in the fight against Russia. He now serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK.

Yermak, who is considered the most influential figure in the Zelensky team, reportedly met with Zaluzhny in December, taking a detour to London on his way home from the US. According to two independent sources cited by RBK-Ukraine, he urged the former top general not to run for president, should he opt to start a political career. Instead, he reportedly offered the ambassador the chance to become the leader of Zelensky’s party, which is sinking in the poles.

Zaluzhny purportedly expressed a willingness to cooperate but made no commitments. One of the sources called Yermak’s optimistic accounts of the meeting “unrealistic.”

Only one in six Ukrainians would vote for Zelensky – poll

Ukraine declared martial law in February 2022 due to the ongoing conflict and has suspended general elections. Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired last May, but he has not transferred his powers to the speaker of the parliament, as required by the Constitution.

Multiple media reports have suggested that Zaluzhny’s high approval rating in national surveys had consistently surpassed those of Zelensky, which may have been a factor in his dismissal.

It remains unclear when elections will resume in Ukraine, but political figures are preparing for such a possibility, the outlet said. Zaluzhny is seen as not only the frontrunner for the presidency, but is also expected to give a significant boost to any political party he chooses to endorse, anonymous insiders have told RBK-Ukraine.

Politicians in Kiev believe that the ex-general’s silence on launching a political career is a strategic move to avoid a “false start.” Zaluzhny’s “campaign, if one could call it that, follows the same script as Zelensky’s,” a source said.

Zelensky, a former comedian, portrayed a fictional character in a TV series who becomes president by chance. He capitalized on that image by running for office and even gave his political party the same name as the show: ‘Servant of the People’. When he declared snap parliamentary elections soon after his own 2019 victory, it won a majority.

Now the brand is “toxic” according to Ukrainian media, and Zelensky’s party could only secure one fifth of the seats in a hypothetical election.
