The Pentagon has claimed that the strikes hit Houthi command posts and military factories

American forces have launched multiple airstrikes on the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, hitting what the Pentagon has described as Houthi military targets. The US and UK have stepped up bombing raids on the Arab country since the militant faction hit Israel with a ballistic missile earlier this month.

The strikes took place on Monday and Tuesday, and involved American ships and aircraft, US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees the Pentagon’s military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The targets included a Houthi command and control facility, weapons production plants, and ammunition dumps, CENTCOM claimed. Additional strikes targeted a coastal radar site and seven Houthi cruise missiles over the Red Sea, the statement added.

Video footage shared by Iran’s PressTV outlet showed smoke rising from several blast sites in Sana’a.

American and British forces have been launching sporadic strikes on Houthi targets since last October, when the Yemeni militants began attacking Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea in response to West Jerusalem’s war on Hamas in Gaza. These strikes have increased in scale and frequency since the group hit Tel Aviv with a ballistic missile earlier this month.

The Houthis fired another ballistic missile at Tel Aviv last week, targeting Ben Gurion airport. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that the missile was intercepted before it could reach its target.

Following the first attack on Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he had instructed the IDF to “destroy the infrastructure of the Houthis” with “full force.” Despite the IDF launching multiple attacks on Yemen, a spokesman from the group said last week that they would “escalate our military targeting of Israel…until the genocide crimes and the siege on Gaza stop.”

Officially known as the Ansar Allah movement, the Houthis currently control around a third of Yemen, roughly corresponding to the territory of the 1962-1990 Yemen Arab Republic, including Sana’a and almost all of the nation’s western coastline. The group emerged as the nation’s dominant military faction during the latter years of its ongoing civil war.
