The area will be established to prevent any “terrorist threat,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said that a “sterile defense zone” will be set up in southern Syria without a permanent Israeli presence to prevent any terrorist threat, according to media reports. The announcement comes as Israeli forces have seized control of the demilitarized buffer zone on the border with Syria.

Katz made the remarks on Tuesday during a visit to a naval base in the northern Israeli port of Haifa. He said that Israeli forces destroyed the Syrian military fleet in an operation on Monday night as part of a broad campaign to eliminate strategic threats to Israel.

“The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has been operating in Syria in recent days to strike and destroy strategic capabilities that threaten the State of Israel,” Katz said, describing the Monday operation as a “great success.”

He gave no details but said the zone would “prevent the establishment and organization of terror in Syria” after Syrian opposition forces seized Damascus.

“We will not allow threats to the state of Israel,” Katz stressed.

Israel has launched strikes across several areas in Syria, claiming it is trying to prevent weapons abandoned by the Syrian forces in the demilitarized zone from falling into the hands of extremists.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israel has carried out more than 300 airstrikes across the country since Sunday.

“We have no intention of interfering in Syria’s internal affairs, but we clearly intend to do what is necessary to ensure our security,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier.

Israel began active military operations in Syria after the armed opposition, spearheaded by the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group, launched a surprise offensive against government forces that led to the rapid collapse of the Assad government and the former president’s exile in Russia.

The Jewish state’s military moved to capture the buffer zone established as part of the 1974 disengagement agreement not far from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar insisted that the incursion is a “temporary step” aimed solely at ensuring security.

However, Netanyahu said that Israel intends to retain total control over the Golan Heights, which it has illegally occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War, “forever,” calling the area “an inseparable part” of his country.

The US has defended Israel’s military incursion into Syria, claiming the operation comes in self-defense. The UN has said the incursion violates the disengagement agreement.
